Make this easy homemade blender salsa in 5 minutes using fresh tomatoes, onion, jalapenos, lime, cilantro & garlic! You’ll never use canned salsa again!
No matter what type of diet you’re on – keto, low carb or clean eating- you’ll love this homemade blender salsa! Especially if you’re a fan of taco Tuesday! (And who isn’t?)
Full disclosure: I once thought making homemade salsa was an unnecessary waste of time until out of necessity I was forced into DIY-ing it & I saw the light.
It all started with a glass jar of salsa and a lid so stubbornly attached that five hot water soaks & at least 1,000 other jar-opening hacks (& 4-letter words) did not budge. I briefly considered breaking the glass I was so desperate, but reconsidered only because my 11-year-old daughter was watching me! Not my finest moment. But I’ve had worse…
Well, I’m sure you’ve heard necessity is the mother of invention? 100% Accurate:)
Here’s What You Need!
- Tomatoes
- Small Onion
- Lime Juice
- Cilantro
- Minced Garlic
- Jalapenos
- Salt & Pepper
I did a lot of experimenting with different amounts of ingredients to get this one right. And yes, I’m a tiny bit ashamed that I researched salsa-but I couldn’t help myself! While I was at it I created this Low Carb Homemade Taco Seasoning– Taco Tuesday is definitely having a moment over at mi casa!:) Here’s the deal:
If you’re in a bind or you want to save time you can use the canned tomatoes. Nobody here is going to judge you! This one is fab, but as long as there isn’t a lot of added sugar and sodium you’ll be just fine!
Plum, Roma, beefsteak & vine-ripened tomatoes are great for salsa. The one you need to try to avoid? Heirloom. They don’t get saucy enough to create a restaurant quality salsa! But don’t feel too bad for Heirloom-they’ve got other things going for them:)
Not a cilantro fan? Leave it out! No one is calling the salsa police!
Spice Or No Spice? (It’s All About The Seeds!)
Since some folks LIVE for heat/flavor while others prefer a mouth that doesn’t feel like it’s on fire, you can adjust the spice to how you like it!
- Just a Little Spicy: Use 1/2 – 1 Jalapeño without the seeds! Most of what gives jalapeños their kick (capsaicin) is in the seeds so you’ll reduce the heat by removing these!
- Baby Spice: Use 1 Jalapeño with Seeds
- Spice Girl: Use 2 Jalapeños with Seeds
- Scary Spice: Use 3-4 Jalapeños with Seeds
Jalapeño Safety Awareness
Is there a day for this yet? Seriously, if you’re new to the jalapeño game you MAY want to wear gloves to avoid Hot Pepper Hands which unfortunately is a thing that cannot be remedied with soap & water! I learned the hard way- so you don’t have to! Read this for the 411!
The best jalapeños or chiles chipotles come on the canned aisle! When canned they’re packed in juices, vinegar & spices AKA: Adobo.
Psst! You can add a dash of the adobe to your salsa to make it spicier – if you dare!
Making Salsa Happen
Here is my favorite part – the effort required is LOW! All you need to do is chop the tomatoes, onion, and jalapenos into large chunks & then toss those & the rest of the ingredients into the blender or food processor! Pulse/blend until you get the consistency you want! Boom! Homemade Salsa!
This is where I’m supposed to tell you how to serve this salsa, but since I’m pretty sure you already know I’m going to take this opportunity to promote my Guacamole Recipe which is FINE!:))
