Why Do They Call It A Bloody Mary?
Feel free to skip this and get the low down on the recipe below. For those of you with inquiring minds – here’s the Behind The Music style 411 on the classic cocktail.
The OG Bloody Mary was first created at Harry’s Bar in New York City somewhere around 1920 when bartender Fernand Petiot started experimenting with vodka and tomato juice.
New York drinkers were not impressed. At their request, Ferdinand spiced up the cocktail with black pepper, cayenne, Worcestershire, lemon juice and a shot of Tabasco. It was a hit.
Some folks say it was Ferdinand who named the cocktail a Bloody Mary after a patron said it reminded him of The Bucket of Blood Club in Chicago and a girl named Mary.
Others maintain the name stems from the dark history of Mary Tudor – the daughter of Henry VIII who earned the unfortunate nickname Bloody Mary after she murdered hundreds of Protestants by burning them at the stake.
I like the first story better.
Either way there is something about Mary
All the best Bloody Marys I have ever enjoyed hail from New Orleans – which happens to be one of my favorite places of all time.
They start the same with a vodka + tomato juice combo followed by Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins is the best), lemon juice, hot sauce(s), and spices.
There are millions of Bloody Mary recipes with outlandish garnishments & rimmers to match, but today we’re sticking to one.
A keto-friendly version of my favorite New Orleans style cocktail!
How Many Net Carbs Are In A Bloody Mary?
The traditional Bloody Mary that uses tomato juice and/or Bloody Mary mix contains around 10 net carbs per cup. Here’s a breakdown of all of the possibilities in case you need the specifics on carbs in Tomato juice, Mr. & Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix, and Zing Zang.
Tomato juice – Full of sugar & carbs (1 Cup = 10 Carbs)
Bloody Mary Mix – Same (Mr. & Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix has 7 net carbs per 5 ounces. Zing Zang has 4 net carbs per 3 ounces.)
Why aren’t the labels easier to read?
Why must there be so much math?
Look, I could list labels all day long – but let’s get to the point.
Is A Bloody Mary Ok On Keto?
Yes – if you use an unsweetened tomato juice, you can enjoy a Bloody Mary on a low carb or keto diet. I am incredibly sophisticated so I used, drumroll please –
canned V8 +
a Shot of Bone Broth.
Boom!
For this Keto Bloody Mary – you’re looking at 6.1 net carbs & 165 calories per beverage
Unless you go over the top crazy on the garnish, which is a thing when you’re doing Bloody Marys!
