How To Make Quinoa (And What Is Quinoa?)

Ok, so in case you don’t know, quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah) is a superfood that’s literally in everything from salads to rice to protein shakes. Oh, and it was also called “the mother grain” by the Inca, so there’s that. Also, quinoa is such a big deal that in 2013 the United Nations took time out of their busy schedule and declared 2013 the “International Year of Quinoa.” No, really. That happened.

Anyway, quinoa is a low carb rice substitute that is also gluten-free -and it’s a healthy whole protein. (Whole protein means it contains all nine essential amino acids.)

Technically, the quinoa we know and the United Nations celebrates is actually a seed from the Chenopodium quinoa plant. This makes it not a too legit to quit grain, but people still refer to it as a grain. And that’s OK, but if you want to get real technical, quinoa is actually what is known as a “pseudo-cereal” — a term used to describe foods that are prepared and eaten as a whole grain but are botanical outliers from grass.

But you’re not here for the 411 on botanical outliers, so I’ll move on to how to get this breakfast party started.

How To Prepare Quinoa

First, rinse it before cooking or risk a bitter disappointment.

Then boil 2 cups of water and add quinoa.

Throw in a pinch of salt and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

When you’re done, go ahead and drain any water that’s left, and you’re good to go.

How To Make Berry Quinoa Smoothie Bowls Happen

Start with the cooked quinoa.

Grab a saucepan and throw everything in it: the quinoa, almond milk, cinnamon, and cardamom.

Crank up the heat to bring it to a boil.

Then bring down the heat and let it simmer on low for 15 minutes.

Let it cool, then add the maple syrup.

Divide and conquer.

Grab the jars and distribute the goods

Per Jar: ¾ cup quinoa – 1 cup berries – 1 tablespoon almonds
