Positive affirmations aren’t just for self-help gurus.

Experts suggest that we follow every correction we give our children with ten positive statements, or affirmations.

Positive affirmations help children build self-esteem and work through anxiety.

Why Are Positive Affirmations Important?

Positive affirmations are important for children because our belief system is built early in life. Positive affirmations for kids lay the foundation for a healthy set of beliefs about themselves and the world around them.

Negative childhood experiences can have far-reaching consequences. If a child only receives negative feedback, he will never believe in himself. By using positive affirmations, parents are setting the stage for a brighter future for their children. Simply put, using positive affirmations creates positive children.

The Negative Mother

I feel like it’s important for me to share the experience that led me to write this post.
I have never heard a mother belittle a child the way I did last week, and I hope I never have to again.

You see, according to her everything her child did was wrong.

He wasn’t being still!

He was too hyper, and she couldn’t seem to understand why he kept asking her for food.

Well, it was right after school, and he looked to be about five years old. Kids typically need physically activity after being in a classroom all day! Not to mention food!

As if she were on the five o’clock news, she began broadcasting to all of the shoppers how the boy is a menace to kindergarten.

There was no voice of reason. Her crew of three friends joined her by making their cruel observations about the child as they shopped. No one came to his defense.

He just stood there with a pitiful look on his face.

At one point he asked his mother if she wanted to know the good things he did that day, but she was too busy laughing with her friends to notice him.

I know I should have done more than pray for this child, but I was so overwhelmed I abandoned my groceries and drove home. See, this scenario struck a chord in me for two reasons.

First, I know how it feels to be a child that’s ridiculed by a negative parent. Let me tell you, it scars you for life.

Also, every time I heard her ridicule her son I thought of my son Nathan. My autistic, non-verbal son Nathan.

How much I would love to hear him ask me for snacks or for anything. The fact that this mother took her child’s health for granted enraged me pissed me off.

But I did nothing.

Until I sat down and wrote this article about positive affirmations for parents. It’s my way of taking action and hopefully helping you a little today.

The 10 to 1 Ratio Rule Every Parent Needs To Know

Every kid makes mistakes.

When they do, it’s our job as parents to point them back in the right direction.

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in too many corrections and not enough positive affirmations.

Keeping the 10/1 ratio in mind will help you remember.

For every one negative thing, you point out in your child – any correction you give them – you need to back it up with ten positive statements.

Teaching Kids Positive Affirmations

You can teach your child to use positive affirmations in several ways.

First, lead by example, and use them yourself!

Start and end each day with a positive affirmation.

If repeating motivational phrases is not for you, or you feel silly at first, you may want to consider writing your affirmations in a notebook.

A Positive Affirmation Notebook like this one with 132 affirmations for kids is perfect. This Positive Affirmation Coloring Book is also a great choice.

Regardless of the manner in which you chose to promote positive affirmations, let me give you a virtual high-5 for the positive vibes you’ll be bringing into the world.

Here are some positive affirmations to help your kids today:)

Thankyou for sharing this! I am a young mother of a small son and am always looking for good positive parenting articles. I was raised in a home where there was very little to no positive words spoken by my parents. Rather my siblings and I always would hear all the things we did wrong. I want to change that in my home now and this is a great article to save onto my Pinterest parenting board!

This makes me so sad! Thank you for sharing. I’m currently reading a book called “Toxic Parents” to help me navigate through my poor upbringing (recommended by my therapist), and I can already see the damage this poor child is going to grow up with. Anyway, thank you for the post, I’m thinking about printing these out and putting them on the fridge.

So glad someone understands what I try to explain to these young parents not to tear down your child’s self esteem. Always remember would you talk to your friends like that. JUST THINK.
