This college packing list is the only one you’ll need. Seriously, everything a girl has to pack for freshman year in one printable checklist: clothes, dorm essentials and decor, school supplies, toiletries, and sanity-saving move-in day tips.

I know college isn’t a regular topic around here, but it’s Lylah Kate’s turn to head off to her dorm, and to keep myself from a full-blown panic, I did what any mother-slash-blogger would do: I built the ultimate college packing list. It covers all of the bases: what clothes to pack, dorm decor and organization, school supplies, emergency contact info, and all those random-but-important things nobody remembers until the last minute.
It’s broken down by category, with links for almost every item, in case you’re like me and want to knock out as much shopping as possible ahead of time, from the comfort of your home in your jammies.

Move in Day Must-Haves
Let me tell you exactly how college move-in day goes when nobody plans ahead.
Back in my former life as a Resident Advisor at Ole Miss, freshman move-in day had an unofficial name: the ultimate parent freak zone. I watched it play out hundreds of times, and the pattern never changed.
It starts small -a miscommunication about what time to arrive, a floor plan nobody looked at, a car packed in the wrong order so the mini-fridge is buried under forty pounds of throw pillows. Then it compounds. The parking lot is a war zone. The elevator’s broken. Dad is somewhere in the lobby holding a lamp with no idea where it goes. Mom’s trying to make the bed and realizes the sheets don’t fit. And the new student? Vibrating with the need for everyone to leave so real life can start.
And here’s where it gets expensive. Every forgotten item – the surge protector, the shower caddy, the Command strips, the second set of Twin XL sheets – becomes a frantic trip to the nearest Walmart, which is also mobbed with three thousand other families who forgot the exact same things. By trip number two, your cortisol is through the roof and your bank account has taken hits you never budgeted for.
It doesn’t have to go this way. The difference between move-in day as a meltdown and move-in day as a victory lap is one thing: a plan. That’s what this list is. Every base covered, every item accounted for, nothing left to a panicked 4pm Walmart run. So you can hand over the keys, hug your kid, and drive home knowing you nailed it.
How we can fix this, so you don’t repeat history?
First, make sure you know the layout of your dorm room.
Most college websites offer easy-to-read downloadable PDFs of floor plans, which is a sanity saver! Understanding the measurements of the windows to the walls…whether or not your closet has doors or curtains & the rules – so many rules – you must follow to avoid fines. No nails – no painting the room – no candles – no hot plates – no extension cords without surge protectors – and so on…:)
If you’re a parent – ask your child if he/she has this info from orientation.
If you’re a student – Google your college and get the 411 so your mom will stop panicking.
Now that you’ve got the floor plan – it’s time to get your move-in day plan together. Of course, you most likely won’t be welcomed with a dirty dorm, but naturally, you will want to tidy up before unpacking and decorating.
Ladies, get your Swiffers ready – and – for goodness sake make sure you bring a tape measure, level, hammer, screwdriver and whatever that wrench is called your husband uses to rig stuff up.
You’ll be sorry if you don’t. Here’s an example of what your move-in bucket of goodies ought to have:
- Cleaning Supplies: Lysol wipes, multi-surface spray cleaner, bathroom cleaners and scrub brushes. You’re going to want to clean the room before you unpack.
- Command Poster Strips & Utility Hooks Because nails are a no-go – unless you want to pay a fine.

Enough About Move-In Day – Let’s Pack!
Clothing
Your kid’s instinct will be to pack everything they own. Your job is to stop them.
A dorm room is a serious downsizing exercise – there’s no room for ten Patagonia pullovers, three coats, and that sweater still wearing its tags. Pack by season. Depending on where they’re headed, this varies, but if they’ll be home for Thanksgiving or winter break anyway, leave the heavy winter gear behind and swap the wardrobe out then. Their closet (and your car) will thank you.
And here’s an old-school hack worth its weight on move-in day: lay clothes across a tension rod hung between the hooks in your backseat to transport them on the hangers, wrinkle-free. They go straight from car to closet – no ironing, no wadded-up laundry basket, no re-washing everything the first week.
Underwear, Bras & Other Must Have’s
If there’s one category to over-pack, it’s this one. Underwear and bras – okay, that’s two things, but you get the point. Unless you want your kid running a delicate cycle every few days (you know they won’t), send them with every pair of unmentionables you can round up.
That means panties, strapless bras, t-shirt bras, sports bras – and a set of these adhesive covers that save the day when a bra line turns into a fashion emergency. Stock the drawer deep now and you’ll save them a laundry-day crisis in October.

Tees & Leggings
Your kid is going to live in leggings and tees, so make sure a few pairs of basic black – capris and full-length – make the cut. And those bins of high school t-shirts they swear they’ll wear? They won’t. Turn them into a quilt or a shadow box someday, but don’t let them eat up precious drawer space now. A few good basic tees in black, white, and gray they can dress up or down will earn their keep far more than twenty spirit shirts from junior year.
Workout
Pack running shorts, tanks, and yes, a few more sports bras for working out/going to class.

Loungewear & PJ’s
Make sure your kid packs a few presentable sets of pajamas – the kind that can survive a shared bathroom, a fire drill at 2am, or a roommate’s boyfriend wandering through. The chili-stained vintage Care Bear onesie can stay home, at least until they’ve made some friends. Second semester, all bets are off.
Sweaters & Denim
I may have had a little too much fun putting this casual collection together – but hear me on the jeans: your kid does not need six pairs. One or two that actually fit well will get more wear than a whole drawer of maybes. Round it out with a lightweight jacket or cardigan and a few good sweaters, and you’ve covered every temperature from over-air-conditioned lecture hall to walking home in the cold. Layering is the whole game.

Shoes
Two pairs are non-negotiable: shower shoes and a comfortable pair of sneakers. The shower shoes are a communal-bathroom necessity (trust me on this one), and the sneakers matter more than your kid realizes – freshman year is a lot of walking, and cute-but-brutal shoes get abandoned by week two. From there, it’s about their campus and climate: Birkenstocks, wedges, booties, rain boots, riding boots, snow boots if they’re headed somewhere with real winters, and a formal pair or two for the events that always sneak up.

Accessories
Your kid probably has strong opinions about their accessories, but I pulled together a few ideas just in case something got overlooked in the chaos. The one worth flagging: if there’s any chance of football games or big campus events, most stadiums now enforce a clear-bag policy — so a clear stadium bag is one of those things nobody remembers until they’re turned away at the gate. I found a cute one that doesn’t scream “security requirement,” linked below.

Sheet Sets
VIP: Most dorms have extra-long twin beds-meaning standard twin-size sheet will not fit! (XL Twin mattresses are 39 inches wide by 80 inches long.) Also, you are not getting a sleep number bed in college – dorm beds are firm & slightly uncomfortable. You may want to get a memory foam mattress pad – like this one:)

Maximize every inch of space in your dorm room: under the beds, over the doors, and inside the closets and drawers! Final Words
If your student forgets something on this list, don’t panic – it’s a guide, not gospel. Half the fun of freshman year is figuring out what they actually need versus what looked essential in July. (Spoiler: they will not use the label maker.)
A few things worth passing along to them, mom to kid: go to class. Call home occasionally when they don’t need money – because we are, in fact, more than human ATMs. She says, as she slowly hands over the debit card.
And warn them the freshman 15 is real. Midnight pizza every night catches up fast, so it can’t hurt to send them off with a few healthy snacks stashed in the storage drawers under that lofted bed.
As for you, mom: you did it. You planned, you packed, you covered every base – and you’re about to hand your kid the keys to their own life. If this is your last one leaving the nest, the house is going to feel awfully quiet. Get a pet. Take up a hobby. Come hang out here, where at least the coffee’s always on and somebody understands. 💛
Hang in there. Your kid is in college. Give yourself the pat on the back you’ve absolutely earned.
